The World on a Plate Film Festival: Responsible Consumption and Development Through the Lens of a Camera

Food is a necessary condition for survival for all living creatures. It is not only an important part of our economies, but also the foundation stone of different cultural identities. People are widely aware that food they consume at least three times a day has an affect on their health. However, they are less informed about the implications their consumer habits have on the world´s resources. Whilst what we eat affects us and our planet way more than meets the eye!

Food and its production and consumption extensively affect our environment. This happens through greenhouse gas emissions, the usage of land and water resoures, pollution production or for example the use of chemicals, such as pesticides. The link between the primary sector and the environment is reflected for example by the fact that food production is responsible for discharging more greenhouse gases that cause global warming than the transport sector. It is thus very important to show consumers the “hidden costs” of our consumption, which have a great impact on the global limits of our planet and on the lives of people around the world.

The central activity of the project is the World on a Plate film festival that is greatly enjoyed in numerous countries for many years now. The festival is held in Prague and then travels to other Czech cities. The projected movies capture various aspects of food production in the world and the diverse problems that occur across continents. The overall objective of the project is to raise awareness on the topic of responsible consumption and development and on the environmental and social aspects of our eating habits. What is for example the connection between palm oil or high meat consuption and the Czech Republic? Through films and subsequent debates we introduce to the audience the story of their food. In addition, seminars and educational materials offer inspiration and possible solutions on how to deal with these challenges.

The main objectives of the project in the Czech Republic

The overall objective of the project is to raise awareness of our target groups, especially the general public and students, on the topic of responsible consumption and the development, environmental and social aspects of our eating habits. The main goal is to actively engage the participants into discussions and activities that will inspire more critical thinking.

  1. Introduce the issue of responsible consumption, make important data available, and increase consciousness on the relation between current eating habits and sustainable development.
  2. Offer alternatives and encourage a more critical approach to food and consumption through a positive approach.
  3. Motivate and support our target groups to further engage in the responsible consumption matter, educate themselves, and incite discussions with their peers and the audience.
