Press release: European policies harm poor countries

The European NGO Confederation for Relief and Development CONCORD;language=eng#header published a report calling for the European Union to stop policies that harm developing countries. The report is a response to the European Commissions’ announcement on policy coherence for development. A brief evaluation of Czech policies is also included in the report which the Prague Global Policy Institute – Glopolis and FoRS (Czech Forum for Development Co-operation) partook in writing up.

The CONCORD report of forty pages called “Spotlight on Policy Coherence” points at the continuing negative impacts of several traditional European policies on developing countries, for example the trade and agriculture policies, and lately on tax and financial policies, too. According to the report the tolerance of tax evasions, agricultural subsidies, and pressure for quick and widespread opening of markets in countries that are not prepared for it often undermine many of the accomplishments of development aid that flows from the European Union to poor countries.

The report “Spotlight on Policy Coherence” was officially introduced October 14, 2009 in Brussels.
